Of the costume designers currently working, Colleen Atwood and Milena Canonero are tied for the largest number of Oscar wins with four each. Atwood has been nominated 12 times, and has won for her work on Chicago (2003), Memoirs of a Geisha (2006), Alice in Wonderland (2011) and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2017). Canonero has been nominated nine times, and has won the Oscar for her work on Barry Lyndon (1976), Chariots of Fire (1982), Marie Antoinette (2012), and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2015). Teams of designers working together have often won Oscars, as is sometimes required to dress the hundreds of extras required by an epic drama, or to create the intricately detailed gowns which dress up a musical. On other occasions, the winner designed and then oversaw the production of costumes by a team working underneath them. Sometimes the best solution is for a studio to work with a costume design firm.

Best Costume Design winner Mark Bridges succeeds in the daunting task of creating couture looks that infuse this sense of loss into each bespoke gown. Costume Designer Sandy Powell was fortunate to have access to the royal archives and even Queen Victoria’s (Emily Blunt) wedding dress and coronation robes. She does a beautiful job of re-creating the queen’s wardrobe no matter what the occasion.
But as this is also pure fantasy, Atwood draws on a variety of eras, with their signature silhouettes and fabrics, to make us believe that this topsy turvy world could actually exist if we were to allow ourselves to fall down the rabbit hole. We only need to see the human-sized playing card army to know why she was awarded her fourth Oscar on our list for Best Costumes. It takes place in a universe where two distinct worlds co-exist, side by side, without ever really colliding. One a flashy, period drama; the other a world of both fantasies and nightmares.
But as this Hollywood tale continues, the audiences are brought along on a wild ride full of movie sets and period costumes designed by Academy-Award nominated designer, Mary Zophres. The costumes in Rob Marshall’s 2002 film adaptation of Chicago are something else, with each scene filled with exquisitely dressed characters singing, dancing, and killing no-good lovers. The voice and hair are cool, but Joe’s mask, absurd armor, and series of tubes look so crazy and menacing. An earlier Colleen Atwood endeavor is the big-budget adaptation of the renowned stage production by the great Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb. With former choreographer Rob Marshall at the helm, Chicago swept the Oscars that year, in no small part due to Atwood’s costuming.
An earlier Baz Luhrmann/Catherine Martin collaboration, this one even more fantastical and romantic. The costumes are reminiscent of a music video, but also the period of the story. They fit seamlessly (no pun intended) into the overall look of the film. The gladiator’s job was to fight to the death with a variety of weapons. Janty Yates had to create costumes that would allow the actors and stunt performers to move freely, while at times still appearing as if they were restricted by their garments. "'Poor Things' was a very rare opportunity to be really free and artistic in a creative process as a costume designer," she continued.
While Austin Butler gives an award-worthy performance, none of it would be possible without the incredible costumes designed by Catherine Martin. The silhouettes, fabrics, and color palettes are simply mesmerizing. When the Costume Design Oscar was first introduced, the first films eligible for consideration were those from 1948, separated into different categories for black-and-white films and those in color. This practice ended in 1967, when the separate categories merged into a single award for costume design, one for art direction and one for cinematography. Black-and-white film went out of style, and in this same year all major television networks also stopped broadcasting in monochrome during the prime time content slots. Carter previously won the same Oscar back in 2019, for Black Panther.
Jaqueline Durran conveys these societal restrictions well by physically confining the March sisters in corsets and tight jackets. But at the same time, the girls are their most liberated, both literally and figuratively, when they are together performing and just being a family. Here, Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) is a tortured genius who can’t separate his past traumas from his current reality.
